Insight Isn't the Same as Change

If you've ever thought, "I know why I do this… so why do I keep doing it?" You're not alone. One of the most common things I hear from people is, "I understand my patterns—I just can't seem to change them." Maybe you know you avoid difficult conversations. Maybe anxiety takes over even when you know you're safe. Maybe you keep ending up in the same kinds of relationships or getting stuck in the same arguments. The frustrating part is that understanding the pattern doesn't automatically stop it. If it did, none of us would procrastinate, overthink, or repeat habits we know aren't helping us.

The truth is, our brains learn patterns through repetition. Many of those patterns developed because they helped us at some point. They protected us, kept us connected, or helped us get through difficult situations. But what once helped can eventually start holding us back. That's where therapy comes in. For me, therapy isn't about finding something that's "wrong" with you. It's about slowing down enough to notice what's happening, understanding why those patterns developed, and practicing new ways of responding.

Real change usually doesn't happen because of one big breakthrough. It happens in small moments. You pause before reacting. You say what you actually need. You tolerate discomfort instead of immediately trying to escape it. Those moments may seem small, but over time they become new patterns.

At Inner Axis Therapy, that's the work I enjoy most—helping people move beyond simply understanding themselves and begin responding differently. Because insight is important. But lasting change happens when insight is put into practice. If you're feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you, therapy can help you build something different.
